The Genre of Rakim Y Ken-Y: Reggaeton

R.K.M. & Ken-Y, which use to be known as Rakim & Ken-Y, are a popular reggaetón duo from Puerto Rico. Reggaeton is a form of urban music that is popular with Latin American youth. It originated in the early 1990s and within 10 years it had spread to North American, Europe, Asia and Australia. This type of music blends Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America’s bomba, plena, merengue and bachata. There is also a touch of hip hop and Electronica added to the mix. Then there is some rapping or singing in Spanish, English or ‘Spanglish’ as well. This is the genre that R.K.M. & Ken-Y produce music in. However, R.K.M. provides romantic rapping verses while Ken-y provides the vocal lyrics.

How did Rakim Y Ken-Y started

Both R.K.M. And Ken-Y come from Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Ken-Y himself was actually born on September 7, 1986. Before rising to stardom Ken-Y had a job working at Mc Donalds selling hamburgers while R.K.M. Was working as a pizza boy. The duo then met while performing at local clubs, weddings, quinceneras and private parties in a small city called Urao just a few years ago. Rakim actually got his start as El Duo mas Romantico de este Genero. The group themselves got their start whenever they met Nicky Jam who introduced them to Pina Records, which was a local record label. Herein they began by working with many different artists such as Don Omar, Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, Hector El Father and various others.

In 2007 R.K.M & Ken-Y’s first album, entitled “Masterpiece” was nominated for Premio Lo Nuestro. Their first hit single was entitled “Down” and it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in 2006. This duo has also created numerous videos for their songs which have included “Down”, “Me Matas”, “Igual Que Ayer”, “Oh,Oh,Porque te Estan Velando”, “La noche mas triste.” Currently they are working on their fourth studio album, which is entitled The Royalty. This album is expected to be released in 2008. Their other popular records include Masterpiece, Masterpiece: World Tour, Masterpiece: Commemorative Edition, Los Magnificos and Los Royalties and their hit singles include Down, Lloraras, Quiero Conocerte, Quien Me Iba A Decir and Oh Oh Porque Te Estan Velando. They have also won Reggaeton Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Latin Song Of The Year from the 2007 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

The future of Rakim Y Ken-Y

It seems that one of this group’s biggest strengths is that they are no different on the stage than they are whenever they are off of it. In other words, they do not pretend to be anything other than what they really are. They see their mission as using their music to reach all kinds of people: young kids, adolescents, adults, rappers, Christians, everyone. In doing so, they wish to bring Reggaeton into areas of the world where it has never been heard before. So far, they are right on track for accomplishing this mission.
